Spirometry Training Course

3 Day Duration

The comprehensive three day spirometry course is designed for health professionals and others that have at least a Grade 12 qualification that wish to perform spirometry in both the occupational and medical settings. The course is appropriate for those with no experience in spirometry and experienced operators and will provide the student with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively perform acceptable and reproducible spirograms

  • Students will receive a full course manual, Formative assessment workbook and Summative assessment workbook
  • The teaching and training equipment is fully compliant with the ATS/ERS 2005 SANS451:2008 Spirometry Guidelines and is in line with the Spirometry Unit Standard SAQA252125
  • The comprehensive syllabus, covering both theory and practical, will provide the candidates with all the skills necessary to perform acceptable and repeatable spirograms.
  • First day: comprehensive theory
  • Second day: revision, questions, theory, practical and hands on equipment
  • Third day: revision, questions, followed by a written test. The formative assessment must be handed in before the test
  • The candidate must pass the test with a minimum of 70%
  • The candidate who does not pass the test can arrange to rewrite the test at the next course in Alberton with an additional cost
  • The candidate needs to complete a Portfolio of Evidence within four weeks after the course including 10 spirometry tests illustrating acceptable and repeatable spirograms done by the candidate in the workplace
  • The candidate will be assessed on the Portfolio of Evidence and if successful will receive a competency certificate in Spirometry testing
  • The candidate who is not successful will receive a certificate NOT yet Competent and will have to redo the full course on their account

Spirometry Refresher Course

1 Day Duration

The 1 day Spirometry Refresher Course is for successful students who have completed a comprehensive spirometry course. Students who provide a copy of their Spirometry competency certificate may register for the Refresher course. Students must bring 5 samples of spirometry test from their onsite workplace spirometer to be assessed for quality. Please ensure that subject confidentiality is adhered to on submission of these sample tests. The Spirometry Refresher Course is NOT a repeat of a comprehensive Spirometry Training Course, though an overlap of information cannot be excluded. There is no examination at the end of the course and students will receive a certificate of attendance.

  • Students will receive a manual
